Can I use UK AQA Chemistry past papers for OxfordAQA?
Yes. Choose questions by topic: a UK paper can contain questions for more than one international unit.
Choose questions on the topics listed for your unit. Check the rest with your teacher; a whole UK paper won’t necessarily fit.
CH01 — Inorganic 1 and physical 1
Choose questions on atomic structure, moles, bonding, energetics, redox, periodicity, Group 2 and halogens. Start with UK AS papers.
Kc and equilibrium in UK AS Paper 1 belong to CH02. UK Paper 2 also includes organic chemistry and kinetics, so choose by topic.
Revise CH01 and try the questions
June 2024 UK AQA AS 7404/1
For atomic structure, amounts, bonding, energetics, redox and inorganic chemistry. Its Kc questions fit CH02.
June 2024 UK AQA AS 7404/2
For amounts, bonding and energetics in CH01, and kinetics, Kc and first-year organic chemistry in CH02.
CH02 — Organic 1 and physical 1
Look for collision theory, Boltzmann distributions, Kc and first-year organic chemistry. An organic question may also need moles or bonding from CH01.
Revise epoxyethane separately. The UK course includes extra work on alcohol production and biofuels; ask your teacher about questions on those topics. Kp belongs to A2, not CH02.
CH03 — Inorganic 2 and physical 2
Choose thermodynamics, electrode potentials, acids and buffers, transition metals and aqueous-ion chemistry. You’ll also need your AS knowledge.
Add Period 3 chlorides to the UK oxide topic. Kp questions in UK Paper 1 are for CH04. Check practical activities by their method, since the two courses number them differently.
June 2024 UK AQA A-level 7405/1
For thermodynamics, cells, acids and inorganic chemistry in CH03. Its Kp questions fit CH04.
CH04 — Organic 2 and physical 2
Use UK A-level Paper 2 for rate equations and organic chemistry, and Paper 1 for Kp. Look for NMR, carbonyl reactions, acylation and polymers.
Add sulfonation, Friedel–Crafts alkylation and the required radical aromatic reactions. UK enzymes and detailed DNA structure go beyond the named OxfordAQA topics, but you still need cisplatin. Acids and electrode potentials belong to CH03.
Revise CH04 and try the questions
June 2024 UK AQA A-level 7405/1
For thermodynamics, cells, acids and inorganic chemistry in CH03. Its Kp questions fit CH04.
June 2024 UK AQA A-level 7405/2
For rate equations and organic chemistry in CH04. Revise the additional OxfordAQA aromatic reactions separately.
CH05 — Practical and synoptic
Practise explaining methods, using graphs, calculating uncertainties and linking different topics. Use your records of the ten OxfordAQA practicals.
The UK practical list includes extra activities and uses different numbers. Ask your teacher to choose questions that fit the OxfordAQA practicals; this guide does not yet select Paper 3 questions.
The UK paper numbers don’t match CH01–CH05
UK AQA AS Paper 1 includes Kc, which belongs to CH02. UK AQA A-level Paper 1 includes Kp, which belongs to CH04. Choose by topic each time.
Use the mark scheme for the question you attempt. UK grade boundaries won’t give you an OxfordAQA grade for a selection of questions.
