OxfordAQA CH03 chemistry: inorganic 2 and physical 2
Work through thermodynamics, electrode potentials and pH calculations. For transition metals, practise the observations and equations together.
CH03 · 90 minutes · 80 marks · 21% of the full A-level
January exam: 11 January 2027. Check the timetable and local starting time.
What to revise for CH03
- Born–Haber cycles, lattice enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy
- Electrode potentials, electrochemical cells and commercial cells
- Strong and weak acids, Kw, Ka, pH curves, indicators and buffers
- Period 3 elements and their oxides and chlorides
- Transition metals, ligand exchange, complex shapes, colours, redox and catalysis
- Reactions and identification of ions in aqueous solution
You’ll need CH01 and CH02 knowledge here too. For Period 3, revise the chlorides alongside the oxides.
Period 3 chlorides
When you compare the chlorides, check whether they dissolve or react with water. NaCl dissolves; SiCl₄ hydrolyses and releases hydrogen chloride. Aqueous Al³⁺ polarises its water ligands, making the solution acidic. Revise the structures, equations and pH changes for the chlorides listed in section 3.2.4.1.
