Ionisation energy questions and graph practice

What a good explanation actually needs

Across a period, the useful chain is increasing nuclear charge, similar shielding because the outer electron remains in the same principal shell, stronger attraction to the nucleus and therefore more energy needed to remove the electron.

The dips need a different explanation: the first p electron is higher in energy than the preceding s electron; a paired p electron experiences repulsion from the other electron in the same orbital.

Advanced mode goes beyond the usual first-IE pattern

Compare second and third ionisation energies across a period, decide which electron is actually being removed from each ion, and explain the sharp discontinuities when the next electron comes from an inner shell. These are useful stretch questions even when a particular paper does not ask them explicitly.
