Before the next question

C(=O) explicitly marks a carbonyl group in the condensed formulae. Direct esterification of an acid and an alcohol is reversible and acid catalysed. An acyl chloride reacts with an alcohol to give an ester and HCl. Alkaline hydrolysis gives a carboxylate salt rather than a neutral acid.

A worked example

CH₃C(=O)OCH₂CH₃ + NaOH → CH₃C(=O)O⁻ Na⁺ + CH₃CH₂OH. Ethyl ethanoate gives sodium ethanoate and ethanol.
