An oxide can be acidic without reacting with water. Silicon dioxide reacts with bases but not with water. Aluminium oxide is amphoteric: it reacts with both acids and bases. Compare oxide structures when explaining melting points.

A worked example

Al₂O₃ + 6H⁺ → 2Al³⁺ + 3H₂O shows reaction with an acid. Al₂O₃ + 2OH⁻ + 3H₂O → 2[Al(OH)₄]⁻ shows reaction with aqueous base.
