AQA route rules worth remembering
CN⁻ substitution adds one carbon to the chain. Reduction of that nitrile keeps the new carbon and gives a primary amine. Using NH₃ directly on a halogenoalkane keeps the carbon skeleton, but the amine product can react again, so further substitution products are possible.
