Keep the initial reaction separate from what happens in excess reagent. Aluminium hydroxide dissolves in excess hydroxide; the copper(II) precipitate dissolves in excess ammonia to form a deep-blue complex. Carbonate behaves differently with the more acidic 3+ aqua ions.

A worked example

Adding carbonate to Fe³⁺ aqua ions gives a brown hydroxide precipitate and CO₂. It does not follow the simple Fe²⁺ carbonate-precipitation pattern.
